What Glitch Text Actually Is
Unicode has a set of characters called combining marks. They have no width of their own and cannot stand alone. Their entire job is to attach to the character before them.
They exist for good reasons. Languages all over the world need accents, tildes, cedillas, dots and strokes placed on letters, and combining marks let any of those be built on top of any base letter.
Nothing in the system says how many you can stack. So if you attach thirty of them to a single letter, you get a tower of marks sprouting off it in every direction.
That is Zalgo text, and that is the whole trick.
There are three groups the marks come from:
- Above. Accents and dots that rise off the top of the letter.
- Below. Dots, rings and strokes that hang underneath.
- Overlay. Slashes and bars drawn straight through the middle.

Medium Zalgo. Several marks per letter, growing in both directions. Still readable, clearly damaged.
Heavy Zalgo. Dozens of marks per letter. The word becomes a vertical smear and readability disappears entirely.
Lookalike corruption. A different approach that swaps letters for odd characters from other writing systems to spell something that looks wrong but stays on one line. Not combining marks at all, and far more stable as a result.
Light and slashed styles are what you want for anything practical. Heavy Zalgo is for a one-off post where the mess is the point.
Glitch Text Is Not a Font, and Not a Character Swap Either
Worth being precise here, because glitch sits in its own category.
A real font is a file that draws normal letters differently. It needs to be installed, and the styling disappears when text moves elsewhere.
Most copy-paste styles replace your characters with different pre-styled ones. The look travels because the characters themselves changed.
Glitch does neither. Your original letters are still there, completely untouched. The generator appends extra characters after each one, and your device draws them stacked on top.
That has one genuinely useful consequence. Your plain word survives underneath. Strip the marks and you get your original text back, spelled correctly. Some search systems and text fields ignore combining marks entirely, so glitch text can match a normal search where script or blackletter text never would.

How a Glitch Text Generator Works
The process is short:
- You type a word.
- The tool goes through it letter by letter.
- For each letter, it randomly picks a number of marks based on your intensity setting, and randomly chooses which marks to use from the above, below and overlay groups.
- Those marks are inserted directly after the letter.
- You copy the whole thing.
Two things follow from this that are worth knowing.
The output is random every time. Generate the same word twice and you get two different results. If you find a version you like, save it, because you will not get it back.
Your character count explodes. Each mark is a separate character even though it takes no visible space. A six-letter word at heavy intensity can easily become two or three hundred characters. Paste that into a field with a 150-character limit and most of it is silently cut off, usually mid-word, leaving a mess.

Use low intensity on anything permanent. A username you will keep is not the place for heavy stacking. It will be trimmed, filtered or stripped somewhere eventually.
Match the intensity to the space. A comment can take more chaos than a display name, because display names are short and get truncated fast.
Copying and Pasting Glitch Text
On a phone: tap copy, open the app, long-press the field and choose Paste. Editing glitch text by hand is genuinely painful, since your cursor moves through invisible marks one at a time. Paste into an empty field and rewrite rather than trying to fix it in place.
On a desktop: click copy, then Ctrl+V or Cmd+V. Deleting is the same problem in reverse. One backspace removes one invisible mark, not one visible letter, so clearing a glitched word can take dozens of presses. Select the whole thing and delete it instead.

Where Glitch Text Works, and Where It Doesn’t
More restricted than other styles, so this list is worth reading before you plan anything around it.
Usually fine:
- Discord messages, in servers that allow it
- X posts
- TikTok captions and comments
- Tumblr and Reddit posts
- WhatsApp and Telegram messages
- Steam profiles and gaming forums
Frequently problematic:
- Instagram, which limits and sometimes strips heavy stacking, especially in bios and usernames.
- Discord nicknames and server names, where many communities run bots that automatically remove or rename Zalgo because it breaks the member list layout.
- Facebook, which filters unusual character sequences in several fields.
- Gaming usernames, blocked almost everywhere.
- Forms, legal names, emails and payment fields. Never. These are validated and will reject it outright.
There is also a courtesy issue that is specific to this style. Heavy glitch text physically overlaps other people’s messages in a chat, pushing into the lines above and below it. In a group or a server, that affects everyone, not just you. Plenty of moderators ban it for exactly that reason, and it is fair enough. Keep the heavy stuff to your own posts.
On accessibility: screen readers often read the base word correctly, then announce every single mark by name, which can turn one short word into a long string of noise. Keep the important parts of a profile plain.
Using Glitch Effects in Design Work
A quick distinction that saves people time. The glitch look in video and graphics, with colour channels split into red and blue offsets and horizontal bands displaced across the image, is an image effect. It is not text, and no copy-paste tool can produce it.
Combining marks give you the vertical, corrupted, overflowing look. If you want the RGB split, scan lines and displaced blocks, that comes from an editor or a design tool.
Where copy-paste glitch text does work well outside social media is anywhere text stays live and editable: chat, comments, forum posts, stream titles, and text layers in design software that supports complex scripts.
